Official Handover of GTHI Kitchen Site to Contractor Marks Major Milestone in Our Kitchen Expansion Project

On Tuesday, October 15th, 2024, the Director General of GTHI presided over the official handover of the GTHI Kitchen Site to FAM Engineering Company. This significant event marks the start of the GTHI Kitchen Rehabilitation and Expansion Project, a key initiative aimed at enhancing GTHI’s institutional infrastructure and expanding its kitchen facilities to meet the growing needs of tourism and hospitality training.

Following the site handover ceremony, a detailed Environmental and Social Safeguards (ESS) briefing was conducted by Salimatou Taal, Social Risk Management Specialist for the Tourism Diversification & Resilience in The Gambia Project (TDR). Taal presented a guide for contractors on understanding World Bank ESS2 requirements, providing crucial insights to the contractor, supervisor, and select GTHI staff. This briefing ensures alignment on ESS requirements, a necessary step before the start of construction, and reinforces GTHI's commitment to sustainable and responsible project implementation.

The GTHI Kitchen Rehabilitation and Expansion Project is set to upgrade the training kitchen facilities, providing a safer and more enabling environment to support the expansion of course offerings and enhance student training. This is part of a larger effort to equip students with the skills needed to adapt to the dynamic demands of the tourism and hospitality industry, which has faced significant challenges due to the impacts of COVID-19 and climate change.

Aligned with The Gambia’s Tourism Policy and Strategy 2022-2032, this project prioritizes human resource development in the tourism and hospitality sector. It focuses on expanding infrastructure and upgrading equipment to better meet industry demands, ultimately strengthening The Gambia’s position as a resilient and competitive tourism destination.
